Day 3 | Wednesday May 31, 2017: Rome (Papal Audience and Christian Rome
Tour)
After a nice breakfast at your hotel, your first sightseeing day in Rome starts! The
tour begins with the Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square! The Audience is
celebrated each Wednesday by His Holiness, Pope Francis (pending the papal
schedule). Following the Papal Audience, we will make our way to the Fontana di
Trevi (Trevi Fountain). In the times of Ancient Rome, this fountain served as the
terminal point of the Aqua Virgo, the main aqueduct that supplied thermal baths.
Following the Trevi Fountain, continue to the beautiful, Piazza Novona. This square
was built on the former Stadium of Domitian that held many festivals and sporting
events (86 A.D). At the center of this square, stands the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi
(Fountain of the Four Rivers). There are four figures constructed on this fountain
that represent four rivers: the Nile, Ganges, Danube, and Rio de la Plata. Next, you
may enjoy free time for lunch, followed by a visit to the oldest of the four major
basilicas in Rome, and the home to the relics of Peter and Paul, the Basilica of St.
John the Lateran. This Basilica is where Pope Francis was installed as Bishop of
Rome, and where he officiates as the Bishop of Rome. Next, we will cross the
street to visit the Holy Staircase. Tradition states that this staircase is from Pontius
Pilate’s palace of Jerusalem during the time of Jesus. It is also said that this
Staircase was brought to Rome by St. Helen in the 4th century. If time permits, you
may climb the steps on your knees, in memory of Christ’s agonizing Passion.
Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 4 | Thursday, June 1, 2017: Rome (Ancient Rome)
Following breakfast, we depart our hotel to go back in time as we explore the
landmarks of the Roman Empire, also known as “Ancient / Imperial Rome”. Some
of the stops will include: Michelangelo’s Renaissance Palace built on the ruins of
the Acropolis and dating back to the 16th century. (Today, it is the seat of the city
government.) Capitol Square is marked by several notable works of art including
two colossal statues of Castor and Pollux that stand guard on the magnificent
staircase leading into the palace. We will also pass the Coliseum, and the Roman
Forum, which at the time, was the center of the Roman Empire’s political, military
and social world. These days, the ruins of the Forum consist of the Temple of Julius
Caesar, Basilica Emilia, the Arch of Titus and the Holy Road. Return to our hotel
for Dinner & overnight.
Day 5 | Friday June 2, 2017: Vatican Museum & Gardens
This morning we will visit the Vatican Museums, a group of most impressive
edifices with hundreds of galleries filled with art treasures. See awe-inspiring relics
and works of art donated throughout centuries as tributes of faith. We'll cover The
Tapestry Gallery, The Raphael Rooms and the most overwhelming Sistine Chapel,
Michelangelo's Masterpiece, restored mural of the Last Judgment. Afterwards, we
will visit the gardens of the smallest country in the world (confirmation pending).
This garden is a place of prayer and meditation for Popes though the centuries.
You’ll see many examples of beautiful Mediterranean flora, architectural works of
art and experience the solace provided by the many sites dedicated to the Virgin
Mary. Afterwards, we return to our hotels for dinner & overnight.
Day 6 | Saturday June 3, 2017: Excursion to Assisi
After breakfast we depart Rome for our excursion to Assisi. We will visit the tomb of
St. Francis. Explore the quaint hilltop birthplace of St. Francis that still retains
something of the atmosphere of the early 1200s, the period when St. Francis began
his ministry. Contained within the huge 13th-century Basilica are many of the
saint's possessions and a series of frescoes depicting his life. You may kneel
before the crucifix from which Jesus spoke to St. Francis, asking him to rebuild His
church. It was in St. Mary of the Angels Basilica where St. Francis spent most of
his life. Here we visit the Chapel, Portiuncola, the rose bush, and the cave where
the saint retired for prayer. Stroll the medieval streets of the compact little town.
After stopping at an outdoor cafe with a view of an ancient Roman temple, we go to
the Church of St. Clare to see the saint's incorrupt body. The foundress of the
Order of Poor Clares followed the teachings of St. Francis by living a life of poverty
and humility. We will visit these two saints' tombs before departing from Assisi.
Enroute back to Rome, we’ll stop at a local winery for a short break and wine
tasting!
